There can be few greater rewards in life than being able to get up in the morning and head off to a job you love.
“If you want it to happen, make it happen” is an often-used expression designed to enthuse. But making things happen comes down to making the right decisions first, Aoraki Polytechnic school liaison and careers adviser Adrienne Barton says.
Aoraki Polytechnic careers advisers know the difficulties some people face in navigating the pathway to their “best-fit” in the job field; to that job that “was made for me”. Highly experienced in helping students young and old reach their best decisions from a sometimes confusing range of options that reflect societal and workplace pressures such as a tighter job market because of the recession, Aoraki careers staff aid the processes of discovery and self-awareness, building on careers guidance offered by school-based careers advisers.
“Like the school-based careers advisers, we are here to explain programmes to empower our workforces of the future and help them identify, harness and build on their strengths.” Ms Barton says the process of self-discovery can be fun as school-leavers and mature students looking for a career change – or just looking for a career – find just how important and valuable they are in our community and just what a significant contribution to the workforce they could potentially bring. “They learn that they matter and have so much to offer.”
“It is also important that school-leavers and students have a Plan B, a career choice that might be an option if first preferences suddenly became unavailable for whatever reason. “We will show them how to develop a sound Plan B and provide pathways to that if needed.”
Ms Barton said one of the advantages for Aoraki Polytechnic students was that their tutors were drawn from the workforce and had wide experience in their former roles. “That alone gives students job-savvy, and training relevance.”
“Aoraki Polytechnic’s main intake is in February so if you are entering tertiary education for the first time, returning to study, or simply wishing to up-skill in a specific field, we can help.” Careers advice is free. Ms Barton and fellow careers adviser Jann Stanbury are available for students and their parents to make an appointment to discuss the options available to them. They can be contacted by dialling freephone 0800 426 725.
