Michelle Ruddenklau - Beauty Coordinator and Tutor

Beauty Coordinator and Tutor Michelle Ruddenklau (NaSA, ITEC) delivers the Certificate in Beauty Treatments (Level 4) and Certificate in Beauty Skills (Introductory Level Two). STAR courses, post graduate course such as Brazilian are also offered and delivered in the Aoraki Beauty Training Clinic.

Michelle gained her national and international qualifications as a Beauty Therapist in 2001. She has been delivering courses for Aoraki Polytechnic since 2007 and has this year received an award for Excellence in Teaching in Learning, one of only two awards given across Aoraki’s five campuses.

Michelle says, “We encourage as many people who are interested to come in and talk to us to discuss options and how it can work for them individually. Because it is part time, it works in so well with other life commitments – work, study, parenting and so on. We have a huge cross section of ages which makes for a fantastic class dynamic.”

“There is so much involved with beauty training, so much more than you expect. The level of sciences, health and safety, customer service and sales, plus of course the practical skills. All of which are so relatable to everyday life and applicable to many jobs. It really is life training.”

Susie Sinclair - Parenting & Care of Children, and Skills for Teacher Aides Tutor

I am now into my second year of teaching child care, parenting and skills for teacher aides at the Oamaru Campus. I am really enjoying being part of my local community and part of a small campus team.

On arriving, in 2001, from the North East of England, I was employed in Dunedin lecturing in similar vocational areas for example the care of children, working with older people, supporting those with varying abilities and counselling.

Initially I trained to work with pre-school infants and children and went on to manage nurseries. I trained further to enable me to train child educarers in the evenings.

I completed an honours degree in Social Work Studies so that I could manage Family centres but ended up remaining in the training of adults in the child and care sector by becoming a training officer. Further study meant I was able to teach social work students at my local university and when they were based in practice.

My last position before moving to New Zealand was as a principal training officer which involved my having responsibility for almost one thousand care and social workers.

It has been very interesting to be accepted and my experiences be welcomed, in exchange I have learnt much by working and living in another country.

One of the most satisfying parts of my work is that I am placed to sow seeds and motivate adults into effecting positive changes for themselves and for those in their lives. It is an honour to be a part of someone’s learning journey and I am often amazed and delighted by how folk respond to new ways of thinking and doing. I believe it’s all about thinking, feeling and doing!
