National Certificate in Science

Develop the knowledge and skills relating to science and laboratory practice. This qualification is designed to provide you with opportunities for further higher level study or entry level employment in the area of science.

What will this programme cover?

  • 16566     Perform organic chemistry functional group analysis
  • 8436       Demonstrate laboratory solvent and distillation separation techniques
  • 9242       Perform titrimetric analysis using colour indicators
  • 8448       Demonstrate knowledge of acid-base pH measurement and equilibria

Students who graduate from Aoraki Polytechnic's 17 week National Certificate in Science (Level 4) programme can directly cross credit their qualification. Certificate of Science graduates who meet the criteria are able to join the CPIT programme in the second semester of their Bachelor of Applied Science (Laboratory Technology) degree.

 

What do you need to apply?

For entry applicants require:

A minimum (or equivalent) of 48 credits at NCEA Level 2, as follows:-

  •           at least 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English
  •           at least 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in Maths
  •           a minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in at least two other subjects.

 Or

Have relevant work experience (of at least two years), the tasks undertaken must provide evidence of competence in English, as specified in the entry criteria above.

Mature students
Applications from mature students (over 20 years of age) are welcomed.

Special Admission
Students who do not meet the entry requirements (or equivalent) may apply to the Head of School for special admission. Admission under these circumstances will be made at the discretion of the Head of School.

This programme is accredited by NZQA.

Employment Options

This qualification is useful for those who wish to pursue employment as science technician in multiple environments primarily chemical and microbiological laboratories.
