Our short courses are valuable learning opportunities but their real value is in offering you an opportunity to sample an area of interest that may lead on to further study with Aoraki.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH: English as a Second Language

Aoraki Polytechnic offers you the opportunity to increase your English language skills on our quality assured, New Zealand registered English Language programme. Our programme will increase your English language in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammatical accuracy.

Study in elementary to advanced classes. All our English classes are delivered in small, mixed nationality groups and taught by qualified English language tutors.

MAORI LANGUAGE PROGRAMMES: Te Reo Rangatira Level 3

The aim of this course is to build skills and proficiency in using Te Reo Māori and increase confidence and ability of participants to communicate about everyday things.  It is particularly useful for students who are considering applying for entry to higher level health or education programmes.  It is also useful for people who already have a level of proficiency in reo who want to maintain their reo.

TRADES: Introductory Welding for Five weeks

This course is intended for beginners who wish to learn basic ARC, MIG and oxyacetylene
welding. It is suitable for the home handy person, panel beater, mechanic, farmer or engineering-welder re-skilling.

 The course covers

  • Setting up equipment
  • Basic welding on mild steel

TRADES: Intermediate Welding for Eight weeks

Trainees are tutored in the requirements of the AS/NZS 2980:2007 welding qualification in ARCand MIG welding.

Entry requirements

  • Completion of Introductory Welding course
  • Those already employed in the welding industry
  • Start Date: 18 April 2012 (Duration 8 weeks) - Please note there will be no class on Wednesday 25 April (Anzac Day)

  • Completion of intermediate welding, extensive industry ARC.  Bare wire Mig and Flux Core

What we cover:

The welding courses offered are mainly practical in nature, using industry standard equipment.

The aim of the Introductory Course is to provide basic training in the welding processes of ARC,
MIG and oxyacetylene.  This then leads on to the Intermediate Course set up to provide industry training up to AS/NZS 2980:2007 Welding Certificate standard.

Protective clothing and substantial leather footwear must be supplied by the student and worn at all
times in the workshop. Safety eye and hearing protection will be provided.

MEDIA: Introduction to Digital Photography

Introduction to Digital Photography for SLR cameras - will include some photoshop.

This two day course is specially designed for anybody interested in photography.

  • Do you want to have the skills to get your SLR camera off the automatic settings?
  • Do you want to learn how to compose and produce images with creativity and flair?
  • Learn how to control and drive your SLR with this two day short course. 

Classes will run at the Aoraki Polytechnic, Ashburton Campus. 
There will be breaks for morning and afternoon tea and a break for lunch.  These times will be decided by the class.
 
You will need to bring your camera, camera manual and card reader if you have one.  
Card readers will be provided at the workshop for those who do not have them.  A pen and some writing material will also be useful for you to take notes.  Printed notes will be provided but you may want to add some notes and comments of your own.
 
Although the focus of this course is the SLR camera, students with compact digital cameras are welcome to enrol.
