Secondary Students

Get a taste of Aoraki STAR and Gateway programmes

You can be a student at Aoraki even before you leave school.

Aoraki Polytechnic offers secondary school students the opportunity to try Aoraki programmes to extend their hands-on learning experience and have the opportunity to see what it is like to be an Aoraki student. Our STAR and Gateway programmes cover a diverse range of subject areas and industries.

STAR

The STAR programme is designed to help Year 11-13 students move smoothly from school into tertiary study or work. Schools are given a certain amount of funding for STAR, so the programme and what courses are offered can vary.

STAR can be a good option if you're thinking of leaving school early, because you may be able to pick up skills that will help you into a job or further study later on.

Gateway

Aoraki Polytechnic offers several courses to complement Gateway students' learning in an industry. Aoraki Polytechnic has Industry Assessors available who may assess you in the workplace.

Student for a Day

This option brings you to campus for a day to find out what a programme is really like before committing to study it. It is free, fun and highly recommended for anyone considering studying at Aoraki Polytechnic.

If you are a secondary student who would like to find out more about our STAR and Gateway programmes please talk to your school careers advisor or STAR and Gateway co-ordinator.

If you are a school career's advisor, STAR and Gateway co-ordinator or teacher who would like to find out more about our STAR and Gateway programmes then please download our STAR brochure or contact our STAR and Gateway Co-ordinator Beryl Parke directly on 03 687 1953 or email beryl.parke@aoraki.ac.nz

NZ Skills Shortage

Some 44 per cent of Kiwi employers in the annual Manpower Talent Shortage survey say they're having trouble filling critical positions, a rise of 14 per cent on the previous year.

To cater for these growing skill needs, Aoraki Polytechnic has designed its portfolio for 2012 with a focus on areas of national and international skills shortages.

For example, to directly cater for the Christchurch rebuild, Aoraki Polytechnic is offering more places and programme options in Trades across several of our campuses than ever before.

What does this mean for you?

If you are considering your career options it may be a good idea to look at which industries have the greatest skills shortages and focus your study choices towards a career in those industries.

So where are the shortages?
